ST. LOUIS – Four Oklahoma wrestlers are still alive at the 2017 NCAA Championships and will wrestle in Friday morning’s consolation rounds. The tournament is being held inside the Scottrade Center.
The Sooners struggled in the opening session of the tournament, recording a 1-7 mark with the only win coming from first-time NCAA qualifier Brad Johnson.
In the round of 32, Johnson downed No. 15 Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin by 4-2 decision. Johnson struck first with a takedown 20 seconds into the bout and added an escape in the second frame for a 3-1 lead through two. Robertson escaped to start the third, but Johnson secured the riding-time in the win. The redshirt senior matched up with No. 2 Brett Pfarr of Minnesota in Thursday evening’s round of 16, dropping a 6-1 decision. He will compete in the session three wrestlebacks.
Mike Longo (141 pounds), Yoanse Mejias (165 pounds) and Ross Larson (285 pounds) each fell in Thursday morning’s opening session, but responded with wins in session two to advance to Friday morning’s third session.
Longo recorded a 16-1 technical fall in 5:09 over No. 7 Joseph Ward of North Carolina in his evening matchup. The junior secured two takedowns, two reversals and two 4-point nearfalls en route to the bonus-point win. He will face Nebraska’s Colton McCrystal, seeded No. 9, in his first consolation bout on Friday.
In his evening contest, Mejias secured a 2-1 decision over Ohio State’s Cody Burcher. Mejias connected for a takedown late in the first period and held on for the next four minutes to advance to Friday’s wrestlebacks. He matches up with No. 8 Dylan Cottrell of West Virginia in his opening bout.
Larson recorded his 55th career pin with a win by fall in 40 seconds over Princeton’s Ray O’Donnell. The redshirt senior secured a quick takedown and turned O’Donnell for the pin. He is set to face Garrett Ryan of Columbia in his first match on Friday.
