WICHITA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma beat Newman 43-6 Wednesday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action and set a new school record by winning its 24th consecutive dual.
The Bronchos are now 17-0 on the season and 4-0 in MIAA competition. UCO won the final seven duals of the season in 2015-16 to begin the record-setting streak. The Bronchos beat the previous mark of 23 in a row set from 2001-03.
The Bronchos fell behind Wednesday night when Dustin Reed beat Zac D’Amico 5-0 at 125 pounds. But UCO quickly rebounded at 133 pounds when Blake Dauphin pinned Cole Sutterfield in 6:21 to make it 6-3 Bronchos. UCO never looked back.
Joshua Ailey took a forfeit at 141 pounds. And though Tyler Mies beat Will Steltzlen at 149 pounds to make it 12-6, UCO wouldn’t lose again.
Bryan Dutton got UCO’s second pin of the night at 157 pounds, a 6:17 win over Forlanda Parker. Dakota Head then earned a major decision 10-1 over Colton Duhr at 165 pounds. And eighth-ranked Miguel Barreras earned a 4-2 decision at 174 pounds.
Then UCO closed the match in style.
Caleb Hawes pinned Noah Ornelas in 22 seconds at 184 pounds, third-ranked Greg Wilson pinned Dalton Weidl in 1:02 at 197 pounds, and fourth-ranked Caleb Cotter pinned Thor Balavage in four minutes at heavyweight.
Three falls in a row made it 43-6.
UCO has just one dual left this season, Sunday, Feb. 5 against MIAA-foe Fort Hays State. The Bronchos are honoring the 30th and 10th anniversaries of the 1987 and 2007 national championship teams.
Head coach Todd Steidley wrestled on the ’87 team and his assistant Kyle Evans was a member of the ’07 team.
