Stars finish seventh in NWCA National Duals with 26-20 win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University collected a seventh-place finish in the NWCA National Duals with a 26-20 victory over Grays Harbor (Wash.) on Friday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.

The Stars, ranked 10th in the Women’s College Wrestling Association, went 2-1 on the day to finish 2-2 in the dual tournament. OCU also won 30-14 over Cumberlands (Ky.) and fell 30-14 to King (Tenn.).

Erin Redford, Yvonne Galindo and Rachel Watters produced technical-fall wins to secure Oklahoma City’s victory in the seventh-place dual. Ninth-rated Grays Harbor led 9-0, and the dual was tied twice.

Redford gave OCU the lead for good with a 12-1 win over Cassandra Parra in the 143-pound match. Galindo won 10-0 over Veronica Coppolino to give the Stars the winning dual points. At 170, Watters’ 10-0 victory put the dual out of reach. Leiana Nacapuy added a fall at 116 pounds for Oklahoma City.

Watters provided OCU with its highlight against King, which holds the No. 5 spot in the team rankings. Watters, a sophomore from Ankeny, Iowa, rolled 10-0 over Keely Sage in the 170-pound bout. Galindo, a senior from El Paso, Texas, knocked off Jessi Kee 9-5 at 155 pounds.

Oklahoma City notched six wins in the final seven matches against fourth-ranked Cumberlands. After Cumberlands went up 12-2, Monica Mendoza of the Stars took a pin 1:18 over Madison Angelito at 123 pounds.
