UCO wrestling goes 3-0 at Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 13) – Central Oklahoma capped off a perfect day at the Midwest Duals with a 31-5 trouncing of San Francisco State here Saturday afternoon, collecting five bonus-point victories and winning the final seven matches of the dual.

The No. 13-ranked Bronchos trailed 6-4 after three weights before overwhelming the Gators the rest of the way.  Colton Looper had the lone fall for UCO, while Miguel Barreras had a technical fall and Eli Hale, Will Steltzlen and Bryan Dutton major decisions.

Central, which beat Mary (28-13) and Adams State (30-15) earlier in the day, improved to 10-2 on the season.  The Bronchos won 22 of 30 individual matches on the day, earning 14 bonus-point wins.

“We had a pretty good day,” said head coach Todd Steidley, now 28-2 in his second year with the program.  “I thought our guys wrestled well for the most part and we had a lot of bonus wins, which is always good to see.  We’re making progress and just need to keep moving forward.”

Looper capped a perfect 3-0 performance with his second fall of the day at 197 pounds, scoring a pair of takedowns before decking Elias Rosales at the 4:17 mark.

Barreras also went 3-0 at 174 and picked up a 16-1 technical fall in five minutes behind a three-takedown, three-near-fall assault.  Hale had four takedowns in a 17-4 major decision at 125 – his third of the day – and outscored three opponents by a combined 42-7 margin.

Steltzlen built an 8-0 first-period lead en route to a 12-3 rout at 149 and Dutton followed with a 13-2 mauling at 157 behind a four-takedown attack.

The Bronchos also got wins from 165 Mason Thompson, 184 Joel Dixon and heavyweight Caleb Cotter.

Thompson pulled out an 8-4 victory with a six-point move in the final 30 seconds, while Dixon posted a 5-0 shutout and Cotter a 3-1 triumph.
