FIRELAKE ARENA- The noon semi-final match ups featured Sand Springs vs Ponca City and Choctaw vs Broken Arrow. Broken Arrow and Choctaw entered the final weight with the score 30-28, setting up a dramatic winner-takes-all match. That is when Junior High state runner-up, freshman Bryce Mattioda, from Broken Arrow, stepped up and locked up a cradle on his opponent to get the fall to send the Tigers into the finals against Sand Springs who finished with a victory over Ponca City 53-9.
Last year, the undefeated Sand Springs Sandites entered the 2016 Dual State Championships as heavy favorites against the Choctaw Yellowjackets. The Jackets pulled off the upset and left the Sandites with heartache. That was one year ago. This year the Sandites set some big goals. They’ve been on mission since day one. Entering the tournament once again undefeated at 17-0.
The Sandites started off with a victory in the 152lbs division when P. Scott of Sand Springs picked up the tech fall for the early 5-0 lead. Next at 160lbs Caleb Wise of Broken Arrow would get the fall in just 1:07 in the first period, to give the Tigers their first lead 6-5.
Things would go back and forth a bit when #2 ranked HWT T. Lieurance of Broken Arrow would get a big throw and put his opponent to his back and finish with the fall.
Things started to slip away from the Tigers when the Sandites scored victories from the next two weight divisions; 106 (#2 ranked) Riley Weir over (#6) Bryce Cockrell with an 11-4 decision and 113 (#3) Tanner Ward with the tech fall 17-1 over (#4) Andy Police.
A big momentum swing would swing back to the Tigers at 120 when T. Lawley of Broken Arrow down 2-3 to (#4) Michael Richey of Sand Springs would pick up a defensive fall late in the second period.
That momentum was short lived when the Sandites scored 15 straight team points including a first period fall from (#5) Blake Sargent. A forfeit to (#1) Dalton Fix. Broken Arrow deciding to bump (#6) Tajaun Daniels up 138 to wrestle (#3) Jack Karsletter, where Karsletter would get the decision 5-3.
Those 15 points would shut the door on any come back. Sand Springs would go on to win 40-26. This gives the Sandites their first ever Dual State Title. What a year it has been for Sand Springs, from heart ache a year ago to rattling off 20 straight dual victories and claiming the 6a dual state title. Congratulations to Sand Springs and their coaches.
Sand Springs will now get ready for regionals which are set for February 17-18. The Sandites, Tigers, and also Ponca City are set to meet again for the East Regionals at Sand Springs High School. Choctaw is assigned to the West Regionals which will be held at Yukon High School.
